Flash is a really good tool for delivering video content on the internet. A good example of this is youtube.com which delivers all of its videos through flash. In this tutorial I will show you how to use the power of flash to deliver video content on your website.
First thing you need to do is to open a new document in Flash. Now to import a video go to File>Import>Import video from the top menu.
Flash has made all the video importing process really simple and easy. As soon as you click on the import video button, you will see a video import wizard open up.
You can see a variety of options in the wizard. Lets start from the top. The first thing is the browse button. From here you locate the video on your computer which you want to be embedded in flash. After that there are four radio button. Only the first two of them are really important to us right now. The first option “Load external video with playback component” will embed the video along with the standard video controls in the form of a video player. In this option, Flash will take care of all the controls for you and you just need to import your video and place it anywhere on the stage. This is the option that we are going to be using right now.
Then next option “Embed FLV in SWF and play in timeline” is a little bit complex. If you choose this option, flash will break down the video into individual frames. Each frame of the video will be converted to a frame in Flash. This method is not usually preferred by developers because this can result in pretty bulky flash movie and also you have to implement the video controls yourself. This method is useful only if your movie clip is very small in length and you want to edit the content of individual frames in the video.
Now let’s load a video. Click on the browse button and locate a video on your computer. I am choosing a wmv video on my hard drive. Now when you choose any video which is not flv or f4v, flash will come up with the following message.
It is most probable that your Flash came bundled with the media encoder software. In that case click on the “Launch Adobe Media Encoder” button in the video import wizard. This will open the Adobe media Encoder Software. Click on the “Start Queue” button to start converting your video to flv.
Once the video is converted, the converted file would be saved to the same location as the source video file. Close the Adobe media encoder and go back to the video import wizard in Flash. Click on browse, locate the newly converted flv file and open it. From the radio buttons choose “Load external video with playback component” and click on Next.
Now you will be take to a screen where you choose the skin of the controls of your video player. Choose and skin and click next.
On the next window, just click finish and you will be taken back to the stage of you flash application where you will see your newly imported video. Press ctrl+ENTER to test your video and see the video player in action.
Using this method you can easily convert any video to flash application which you can place on your website and entertain your visitors with rich video content.
