True that, not fan of splash pages either. But I guess its just a tutorial if you even need to use one. Example, If client requests one, you have to do it.

I think the tutorial has pretty useful techniques if you were wanting to learn how to make some kind of metallic icon.

But i think splash pages are a thing of the past. I wouldn’t recommend to anyone who is designing a web site to EVER have a splash page!
