I agree that you should almost always offer a free trial, but I find that requiring a credit card number and having an automatic billing start date incentivizes the client to actually try your service and learn what it's all about. If they can just casually sign up with no impending billing, they're likely to just forget about it until the trial ends, and then disappear.

Tim, I understand what you mean when you say standing out from the crowd in a big city. You as a person is unique, and your business is unique too, even if in the same category as others. Separate strengths and weaknesses. Evaluate your competition and differentiate. It is possible. Think of car sales for example. What makes you buy from who you buy from? What do they offer? Think outside the box. Remember everyone shouting "pick me pick me" will be heard by the customer but it will be interpreted as just noise. They cannot see you, nor hear you because of competition unless you stand out, and the only way to do that is by creating more value. I hope this helps

Nice Post !

It´s very important offer unique service to customers, but sometimes the people dont understand the plus that we offer.

In Mexico exist some people that dont understand the concept of webdesign and adquire what ever they find with low cost and obviously a bad service.

We need to put more effort todescribe the plus.

You say: "You want to offer something unique to your customers." - which is of course true, but its very difficult if you're doing a web design business in a big city like me - how to stand out from the crowd is pretty tough...

it is nice to see people like you giving advices like this, but there is a problem, there is a large percentage of people that are focused only at one task, or even worst one skill: only design, only development etc.
a little marketing perspective will not do harm, only when you copy the other guys strategy and you will find yourself, the designer, with clients that want to buy sheep's hahahaha
